NAACP Update

Hot mess is the best way to describe what’s going on with the Ohio chapters of the NAACP.  I’m not the only one commenting on the crazy in the Ohio branches. The madness is being discussed by columnists in Cleveland and Cincinnati as well.  Some of it is making national news.  The largest urban cities in the state, Columbus, Cincinnati and Cleveland,  do not have active branches.  The Cincinnati branch is in a court of law to  get a legal decision on who won their election.  Columbus didn’t have its scheduled 2014 election. It appears the old tainted leadership whose terms have expired have gangstered the branch and are now sending out a newsletter reporting on its activities.  So much for the voice of the people and democracy in action.

Black people and NAACP members in the seventh largest state in the country deserve better.  There is important work that needs to be done.  The unemployment rate for young Black men is extremely high, there is the miseducation of our children and the police are killing unarmed Black folks without any penalties.

Is it a national leadership issue?  The national president recently attended the regional NAACP conference in Columbus and didn’t appear to discuss the matter with those in attendance. Is it a statewide leadership issue? Does this “power” make folks lose their minds and do anything to keep it?  What’s going on?  Why can’t the branches of the Ohio NAACP conduct fair elections?  Funny how they monitor governmental elections but can’t administer ethical branch elections.

I have placed calls to the state, regional and national offices.  No one given me the courtesy of returning a call for comment.
