Black History Month Feb. 11 – Clifford Alexander, Jr. first Black Secretary of the Army

Clifford Alexander, Jr. is confirmed as the first African American Secretary of the Army on Feb. 11, 1976. He held the position until the end of President Jimmy Carter’s term.

He graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University and attended Yale Law School. In 1958, he enlisted and served in the National Guard.
