Ohio’s Third Congressional District has received more than $34 million in federal funds this month alone.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently awarded grants totaling more than $7 million to Ohio’s Third Congressional District. U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) issued the following statement in response:
“These announcements are welcome news for my constituents. Funds will be used to invest in Columbus’ Southside, assist homeless youth, improve social services for our most vulnerable neighbors, and ensure safe, lead-free housing for children. As a supporter of these HUD and HHS initiatives, I promise to continue to advocate in Congress for the resources needed for both federal agencies to carry out their important work in the community.”
Specifically, HUD gave the City of Columbus $5.6 million to identify and eliminate lead-based hazards for low-income families with children under the age of six. HHS allotted over $900,000 to The Ohio State University to fuel groundbreaking medical research and a $400,000 grant to better coordinate the delivery of social services for at-risk Central Ohioans. HHS also announced $800,000 in funds to stimulate job growth in Columbus’ Southside and $200,000 to support homeless youth and runaways.
Throughout Beatty’s time in Congress, she has been a stalwart champion of HHS, as well as HUD, and has worked across the aisle to increase funding for young people and families who do not know where they will sleep at night. To date, Beatty has secured $40 million for the Family Unification Program—a national initiative to prevent family separation due to homelessness among foster care aging-out youth—and another $6.07 million for the City of Columbus’s Community Shelter Board to tackle area youth homelessness.
