The next generation of storytellers is preparing to make history.
The C&P Sentinel Youth Summer Initiative begins on June 15, 2026, providing aspiring student journalists with hands-on experience in developing, producing, and publishing their own newspaper. Participants will also document their journey through podcasting, sharing their experiences and perspectives while learning the fundamentals of journalism, media production, and community engagement.
Guided by the principles of Professionalism, Class, Tact, Sophistication, Style, and Culture, this Columbus Urban League initiative is designed to cultivate the voices of tomorrow while honoring the legacy of Black journalism.
As part of the “Classic For Columbus” and America 250-Ohio Celebration, the Call & Post – Columbus Edition will host a special evening event exploring the cultural significance and historic impact of African American newspapers in Central Ohio before the rise of the internet and the digital age.

The evening will feature:
- A panel discussion on the role of Black newspapers in informing, educating, and empowering the African American community.
- A student journalist press conference unveiling the inaugural youth-produced newspaper.
- A posthumous celebration honoring Amos H. Lynch, former Call & Post Editor and Publisher, for his enduring contributions to Black journalism.
During the event, three current newspaper editors and publishers will be recognized for their commitment to community journalism:
- Ray Miller, African American News Journal
- Jack Harris, The Communicator News
- Ronda Watson Barber, OhioMBE Publication
This Ohio Semi-Quincentennial Celebration initiative is supported by The Ohio State University Office of Communications, the Columbus Dispatch, Columbus Business First, and the Columbus Urban League, with additional support from CABJ, NABJ, and other local media organizations.
This celebration honors the past, inspires the present, and empowers the future of journalism in Central Ohio.
