The Opportunity

We are looking for a seasoned leader excited to lead cutting-edge work within the City of Columbus Division of Power. In this pivotal role, you will:

  • Lead engineering teams and contribute to utility infrastructure designs.
  • Mentor and guide less seasoned staff members.
  • Collaborate on strategic goals, policies, and operating procedures.
  • Drive continuous improvement within the division.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Administrator in managing the municipal electric power generation, transmission, and distribution system.
  • Coach, mentor, train and develop employees to reach their highest potentials. 
  • Develop and implement strategic goals, administrative policies, and operating procedures.
  • Oversee the preparation and maintenance of engineering plans, specifications, and records.
  • Coordinate efforts between the division’s engineering and distribution sections.
  • Review and approve purchase requisitions, contracts, and changes in plans and designs.
  • Conduct surveys, investigations, and compile reports to make informed recommendations.
  • Prepare legislation and consult with the City Attorney on legal aspects.
  • Represent the Administrator in meetings with City officials and stakeholders.
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual budget and reports.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field.

At least five (5) years of managerial experience in an engineering group, utility distribution system, or related field. (A master’s degree may substitute for one (1) year of required experience.)

Valid State of Ohio certificate as a registered professional engineer (P.E.) and professional electric utility engineering experience may be required for some positions.

Desired Skills and Attributes

  • Deep knowledge of electrical utility regulations, power planning, and purchase.
  • Strong understanding of management and supervisory practices.
  • Experience in contract negotiations and government bidding procedures.
  • Proficiency in electrical utility engineering and power plant operations.
  • Ability to analyze problems, make recommendations, and communicate effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain professional relationships.
