Ohio improving purchasing with MBEs

The State of Ohio is improving its mandated procurement goals with certified minority owned businesses, the Cleveland Plain Dealer recently reported.  State law requires every state agency, board and commission to devote 15 percent of goods & services spending with certified MBEs.

In fiscal year 2013, more than 10.1 percent of all goods and services contracts awarded went to certified minority owned businesses.  MBEs were awarded $86 million in contracts.

Nine agencies exceeded the 15 percent goal.

Rob Nichols, spokesperson for Governor John Kasich commented to OhioMBE, “The governor is committed to improving the state’s MBE numbers and has made it abundantly clear to all the agencies that they need to do a much better job.  While we’ve made good progress over the three years we’ve been in office, there is still a lot more work to be done.”
