Celebrate Black History! Make Black History!

Kudos to those who are taking a stand. They are one of the reasons we honor and celebrate Black History Month -to honor those who took a stand. Those who spoke out. Those who made a difference. I continue to ask who is advocating for Black folks in Columbus? Who is looking out for Black-owned businesses that hire Black people? Who is looking out for our collective best interests?
It is quite refreshing to see the minority contractors in Cleveland protest in the cold and rain. They are not satisfied with the lack of inclusion on a construction project. They are letting their voices be heard in winter Cleveland weather. They are vocal and determined. Groups in Cleveland are considering a recall of the mayor. They are not happy with him. They too are taking action.
Recently during a candidates forum, Pastor Michael D. Reeves, Sr., challenged those seeking an elected position on Columbus’ City Council. He spoke on the lack of a specific agenda for Black residents.
According to ColumbusUnderground.com, Reeves said, “No one has specifically talked about the agenda you have for Black folks,” he stated. “You keep using the word minority, but that encompasses several groups. Women, the gay community, the Latino community, Asians, Indians, and so on. My concerns are for everybody, but I continue to see Black folks getting the short end of the stick. Everything looks great from the ivory palace Downtown, but if you come up a few blocks you’ll see different environment. Your record has to mean something.”
Challenge those asking for your vote. Ask them what they plan to do to help Black-owed businesses? Ask about their record on advocating for Black-owned businesses. Actions speak louder than words.
