Seventh Annual Ohio Civil Rights Hall of Fame Inductees Announced
Ohio’s Heroes of Justice and Equality
Columbus, OH — On October 15th, 2015, the Ohio Civil Rights Commission (OCRC) along with founding sponsors Wright State University, Honda of America Manufacturing, Inc. and the event’s sustaining sponsor, PNC Bank, will host the Seventh Annual Ohio Civil Rights Hall of Fame ceremony. The program will consist of a formal ceremony that will honor men and women who have made significant contributions to the progress of civil rights and equal justice in the State of Ohio. WBNS-10TV News Anchor Kristyn Hartmann will be Mistress of Ceremonies for the event and Dr. Sean Decatur, President of Kenyon College, will be the keynote speaker.
The 2015 Ohio Civil Rights Hall of Fame honorees are:
Nimrod B. Allen (1886-1977)
Nirmal K. Sinha (Columbus, Ohio)
Merri Gaither Smith and Schuyler Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio)
Louis Stokes (1925-2015)
The Ohio Civil Rights Hall of Fame seeks to acknowledge the citizens who have left their mark in the State of Ohio through their tireless efforts toward the furtherance of civil rights, equality, and justice in their communities. The honor bestowed on this select group of civil rights heroes will be officially recorded in Ohio’s history. OCRC incorporates the important message of this historic event into its education and outreach program.
Chairman Leonard Hubert of the Ohio Civil Rights Commission said, “We are honored to welcome this year’s class of inductees to the distinguished group of men and women who make up the Civil Rights Hall of Fame. These extraordinary individuals have helped improve the lives of Ohioans through their dedication to civil rights and we are thrilled to celebrate their contributions.”
The Seventh Annual Ohio Civil Rights Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place on Thursday October 15th, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in the Ohio Statehouse Atrium. All members of the public are invited to attend the induction ceremony and the reception to be held in the Ohio Statehouse Rotunda immediately following.
The Ohio Civil Rights Commission is responsible for enforcing state laws against discrimination. OCRC receives and investigates charges of discrimination in employment, places of public accommodation, housing, credit, and disability in higher education. OCRC follows a proactive approach in education, training, and the dissemination of publications to better educate and inform Ohioans about their civil rights.
