Leader Sykes urges Ohioans to apply for Driver’s License Amnesty Program

Application deadline is December 31

COLUMBUS- House Democratic Leader Emilia Strong Sykes (D-Akron) today reminded Ohioans looking to reinstate non-commercial drivers licenses to apply for Ohio’s driver’s license amnesty program by the December 31 deadline.

“For many Ohioans, going without a valid driver’s license makes it harder to get to work and school, to buy groceries or to get in to see their doctor,” said Leader Sykes. “By offering an alternative to get back on the road, we’re making it easier for working Ohioans to access transportation options that make sense for them and their families.”

The Reinstatement Fee Amnesty Initiative is a temporary program that applies to offenders whose non-commercial driver licenses have been suspended for certain violations. To qualify for a fee reduction or waiver, applicants must have completed all court-ordered sanctions and have had at least 18 months pass since their suspension period ended.

Those who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits can receive a waiver for their fees and non-SNAP recipients may receive a reduction. Applications must be received or postmarked by the deadline.

For more information on the program, Ohioans can visit the Ohio BMV’s suspension and reinstatement page or visit a local BMV branch.
