OhioMBE Wall of Shame Entry: Columbus City Council

OhioMBE takes a firm stand in highlighting actions that counteract the progress and fair treatment of minority businesses in Ohio. It is with deep concern that we announce the addition of the Columbus City Council to our Wall of Shame.

Recently, the Columbus City Council voted 5-2 in favor of allowing non-citizens to bid on government projects and apply for city certification. This decision, while seemingly inclusive, raises significant concerns about the allocation of resources and opportunities that were traditionally aimed at empowering local, minority-owned businesses. This shift in policy could inadvertently sideline Black businesses, many of which have historically struggled to gain a foothold in competitive government contracts.

Moreover, the conduct displayed by the Council during this decision-making process, particularly by the “honorary” white woman council member Lourdes Barroso de Padilla, towards Black community leaders was dismissive and disrespectful. Such behavior is not only unbecoming of elected officials but also undermines the principles of inclusive dialogue and respectful engagement that are essential in a diverse community.

The OhioMBE Wall of Shame is not just a catalog of grievances but a call to action. It serves as a reminder that our fight for equality, respect, and fair representation in the business community is ongoing. We urge the Columbus City Council to reconsider their stance and approach, to ensure that the voices and needs of minority businesses are not just heard, but are a driving force in policy-making.

Inclusion should not come at the expense of those who have long been marginalized. OhioMBE stands with the Black business community in demanding fair treatment, respect, and equitable opportunities.
