Standing on Business: Eric Mays “Why Ain’t You Fired”

Eric Mays stood as a fervent advocate for Flint, Michigan’s residents. His term was characterized by his outspoken approach during the Flint water crisis and frequent clashes with peers. Mays, whose death on Saturday was confirmed by the city, was 65. Elected in 2013, he was celebrated for his courageous dedication to the residents of Flint’s First Ward. His impactful legacy and influence will be profoundly missed, a sentiment shared by the city on Facebook.

The Columbus Board of Education could learn from Mays’ dedication. It’s crucial that they forcefully support Black businesses and scrutinize the uneven distribution of contracts, especially the disproportionate favor towards white-owned businesses. I look forward to seeing a board member embody Mays’ boldness, demanding, “Why Ain’t You Fired!” in their quest for answers and accountability. For a glimpse into Mays’ advocacy, I suggest this video.

In Columbus City Schools, there seems to be a tolerance for failure, with the elected board failing to hold anyone accountable. No one has been dismissed for the dire state of classrooms that led to a teachers’ strike, the inefficiency in student transportation, or the widespread safety concerns.

Rest well Mr. Mays. Your advocacy didn’t go unnoticed. The fight will continue.

just my thoughts…
