Reflecting on Terri Wise’s Illustrious Career: A Missed Opportunity for CCS

As Terri Wise concludes her remarkable 24.5-year journey as the Outreach Coordinator, it’s clear the district is parting ways with an irreplaceable ally. Throughout her tenure, Terri has been a beacon of support and advocacy for Black and women-owned businesses, a commitment evident in the outpouring of gratitude from countless vendors since her retirement announcement.

Terri stood as a champion for LEDE vendors, deeply invested in nurturing the growth and success of businesses often left on the fringes. Her approach to each business owner was marked by a rare combination of dignity and respect, making her a trusted advocate within the district.

However, Terri’s dedication often placed her in the line of fire, battling daily against colleagues and administrative resistance to uphold the district’s inclusion policies. It’s disheartening to learn that her superiors failed to appreciate her expertise, a sentiment echoed by the long-term interim COO’s unfulfilled promise of providing essential staff support to her office. This oversight not only undermines the foundation Terri worked tirelessly to build but also leaves LEDE vendors and the incoming Outreach Coordinator without the vital institutional knowledge they desperately need.

In the wake of her retirement, it’s troubling to observe the district’s handling of the transition. The actions of the administration have been nothing short of grimy and unprofessional. The absence of meaningful engagement with Terri about the operation of the office she founded, coupled with instances of dishonesty and exclusion, speaks volumes. The decision to host a LEDE Vendor Open House without extending an invite to Terri, alongside attempts to claim credit for her efforts, is deeply concerning. These actions raise serious questions about respect and integrity.

The manner in which Terri Wise was treated reflects a broader disregard for Black businesses and the Black community at large. Her induction into the OhioMBE Hall of Fame is a testament to her impact and the void her departure will leave.

On behalf of the many businesses Terri has guided through the complex terrain of CCS purchasing biased racist practices, we extend our heartfelt thanks. Enjoy your well-deserved retirement, Terri. Your legacy of service and advocacy will not be forgotten.
