Are you advocating for Black businesses?

Are you advocating for Black business?
By Ronda Watson Barber, publisher

Black owned businesses are important!  I continue to ask, who is advocating  for Black-owned businesses?  Who is making sure that Black-owned businesses are getting their fair share in government  and private-sector contracting?  How many corporations, non-profits,  school districts and local governments are making money off the Black community and don’t invest whole-heartedly in the Black community? How many business assistance programs that are funded with tax dollars, simply exist to provide jobs for employees of the program?

If decision makers and the one’s with legislative powers won’t actively support Black owned business, there are a couple  of things we as consumers can do.

  1. Make regular purchases from Black-owned businesses. Black business owners typically hire Black people.  When you support Black businesses, you are helping to provide employment opportunities in the Black community.
  2. Encourage your employer and church to buy products or services from Black-owned businesses. Get familiar with the procurement and purchasing practices of where you work and worship. Advocate for Black businesses!

Black businesses matter!
