Columbus City Schools is seeking a $100 million annual levy from local taxpayers, a move that raises concerns given the current state of the district’s classrooms. It’s particularly troubling that major renovations are underway at the 17th Avenue administrative building, situated in a predominantly Black and economically disadvantaged neighborhood. This comes at a time when residents are already being asked to shoulder higher property taxes. Even more disconcerting is the involvement of Steve’s Hauling in this project. The company is not certified as a disadvantaged business and seems to be based in Canal Winchester. This decision questions the district’s commitment to engaging with Black-owned businesses, especially when they are quick to solicit increased taxes that disproportionately impact Black communities while funneling funds out of the area.
