What’s “size” got to do with it?

My Mother gave me timely advice over 40 years ago. Although philosophical, she said, “As long as you look and act the part, no one will know that you are broke, but you and who you tell!” Extrapolating from her words of wisdom, my advice to small businesses – (of course, within reason) is to look, act, talk, and conduct your businesses like the corporate elite. Your modus operandi through your polished business etiquette should glisten with classy professionalism. Included in your corporate repertoire should be a number of factors that will make you as a small business professionally stand out from the crowd:
- Your prompt and proficient resolutions toward addressing problems with clients (Invariably, they will arise);
- Your ability to deliver your services and products on time and within budget;
- Your ability to hire smart: Having technically capable staff aboard will become your saving grace and trademark toward maintaining and establishing top notched operational standards;
- Your reputation: Ethical conduct goes a long way! Preserve your reputation by honoring your commitments and by upholding professional standards in all aspects of performance.
Prospective and existing clients “size” you up based upon these aforementioned factors including your professional conduct, your respectful grace of being timely for appointments, your business savvy, your conversational readiness, your demonstration of social responsibilities, your participation in civic / community activities, amongst others. Generally, your presence and participation are symbolic of your commitment.
As with most small businesses, budgetary constraints may prohibit “hob knobbing” in selected circles. Yet, there are so many avenues including community events, small business forums, speakers’ bureaus, and other paths that are either free or affordable. These forums bring you and the “cream of the corporate crop” together under one roof for the same purpose.
Operating alongside the corporate giants embodies more than size. It also includes the 3 A’s, namely Aptitude, attitude, and altitude. If the three A’s are in sync – positively, your ability to maximize your firm’s potential will be enhanced. Remember, attitude influences altitude! How you think determines how far you will ascend irrespective of size! You may be small, but your professional operational efficiencies can position you to “look and act” like a big company. Thus, size is not as big of a deal as one may think! The final test rests with the clients. Clients don’t care whether you are big or small. They care about results!
