Congresswoman Beatty to Preside Over House Vote to End Government Shutdown

Speaker Pelosi appoints Congresswoman Beatty Speaker Pro Tempore on the first day of 116th Congress.

Today, on the historic opening day of the U.S. House of Representatives for the 116th Congress, U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) will serve as Speaker Pro Tempore for the important vote to end the 13-day long government shutdown. In advance of taking the gavel, Beatty issued the following statement:

“On the first day of the new House Democratic majority, I am honored to have the unbelievable opportunity to preside over the vote on legislation to reopen the government and provide certainty to hardworking Americans negatively impacted by President Trump’s government shutdown. Right now, countless Central Ohioans and families across the nation are anxious—uncertain of when they will get their next paycheck, how they will pay their bills, and afford their mortgage—and every passing day costs our economy billions of dollars. It is long past time for Republican leadership to put country over party, stand up to Trump, and finally get serious about working across the aisle to reopen the government.
