Leader Sykes observes Minority Mental Health Month

COLUMBUS— House Democratic Leader Emilia Strong Sykes (D-Akron) today recognized Minority Mental Health Month, observed annually in July to raise awareness and promote education regarding mental health conditions that impact Ohio communities.

“Ohioans are suffering every day because of challenges managing mental health issues, and we have a responsibility as lawmakers to help create awareness and highlight disparities that impact our communities,” said Leader Sykes. “I encourage you and your family to engage in conversations about mental health so we can begin to break the stigma and create a better and brighter future for everyone.”

It is estimated one in five Americans are affected by mental health conditions each year. However, access to mental health treatment differs among racial and ethnic identity groups, and other minority communities. These disparities point to significant social and structural barriers related to health care.
