As a life member of the NAACP, following in the footsteps of my father and grandmother, I feel a deep sense of responsibility to hold this esteemed organization accountable. The attacks on President Watson’s character and the lack of transparency from the national office are troubling. These issues demand attention and action to restore trust and to uphold the organization’s mission of advocacy, inclusion, and fairness. The Columbus, Ohio branch—an institution vital to the empowerment of Black communities—is facing troubling questions about its leadership and operations. These concerns must be addressed immediately by the national NAACP leadership to ensure transparency and integrity. Below are the key issues that demand answers:
How Did the Local Media Obtain Internal Correspondence?
The recent leak of a cease-and-desist letter to the local media raises serious concerns about organizational confidentiality and integrity. How did this happen, and what sanctions will be imposed on those responsible for this breach?
Why Has There Been No Communication with Members?
Members have expressed frustration over the lack of updates on critical developments within the branch. The absence of timely communication undermines trust and transparency. Why has there been such a prolonged silence?
Why Was There No Leadership Election?
The NAACP has a long-standing commitment to fair elections. Yet, members in Columbus have been denied the right to vote for their leadership. This is unacceptable. What steps will be taken to address this breach of democratic principles?
When Will Members Hear From the National Office?
Without consistent and clear communication, members are left in the dark. When will the national NAACP address these concerns directly with the Columbus membership?
What About Membership Refunds?
Members who joined or renewed under the assumption of a functioning local branch deserve clarity. Will refunds be issued, and if not, what is the rationale behind this decision?
Is President Watson’s Advocacy the Real Issue?
President Watson’s efforts to push for the inclusion of Black businesses in local procurement processes have not gone unnoticed. However, the opposition she faces raises critical questions: Are these attacks on her reputation and character an attempt to silence her voice? What steps have her opponents taken to ensure supplier diversity? It appears they are complaining without contributing. Are her opponents working with corporate Columbus to stifle her efforts?
Many in the community are questioning what the nay-sayers have to gain. What is in it for them? What is their plan? What is their track record for promoting purchasing inclusion? If they are truly committed to advancing equity, their actions should reflect that commitment. Where have they been in the fight for supplier diversity?
What Role Does Tom Roberts Play?
As the state president, Tom Roberts must lead by example. Yet, there are reports of potential bylaw violations in the Dayton branch—where a husband and wife allegedly sit on the executive board. How can he effectively oversee Columbus operations while such violations persist under his watch? Moreover, what relationship does Roberts have with those opposing Ms. Watson in Columbus?
The NAACP’s mission is rooted in advocacy, inclusion, and fairness. Yet, the national office has failed to provide the Columbus membership with any concrete evidence of wrongdoing by President Watson. Instead, members are left with unanswered questions and media leaks that undermine trust. The organization must take immediate steps to clarify its position and support Ms. Watson’s efforts toward supplier diversity and economic inclusion. Restoring trust begins with accountability and protecting those who are working tirelessly to advance the mission of equity.
As a supporter President Watson, I commend her tireless advocacy for supplier diversity and economic inclusion. Her leadership has brought attention to critical issues that others have neglected. The Columbus branch deserves leaders who work for the betterment of Black businesses and the community at large, not individuals who conspire to stifle progress. The attacks on Ms. Watson’s character appear to be a distraction from her important work, and it is time for the national office to support, rather than obstruct, efforts toward equity and inclusion.
just my thoughts…rwb
