Mmelo Boutique Confections Named Women-Owned Business of the Year

The Women’s Business Center of Ohio recently recognized Michelle Allen as Women-Owned business of the year.  Allen is the owner of MMELO, a European style confectionery/cafe concept that uses whole-food organic ingredients that are creatively combined to make unique flavors and always beautifully presented products.
A Columbus native, Michelle Allen went to Ohio State University before heading to New York, where she founded her own production company which she successfully operated for 14 years. She uprooted to Spain, where she lived for 12 years, and started her own natural hair products company. During her time living in Spain, she encountered different and unique cuisines. Being a self-admitted foodie, those experiences led to the inspiration behind MMELO.

The recipes at MMELO are developed and designed around a healthy respect of whole foods and their unique flavors.  It starts with MMELO’s “no junk” policy: No refined foods, no names you cannot pronounce, no unhealthy fats – just whole foods meticulously chosen.

According to Allen, “When we began our pop-up store in Easton at the end of 2015, having a permanent location was a dream. Now, just a year later, we are located in the heart of the Short North / Arena District, doing what we love – making confectionary magic and bringing a little taste of Europe to Columbus with our European-style café.

Since opening our doors, we’ve met amazing new customers, had incredible media coverage, and received an overwhelming amount of love and support from this great city.”

Michelle has been an ECDI client since 2014, utilizing the Food Fort, the WBC, and ECDI’s lending services to enhance her business. Her cafe is located in the Short North at Vine St & N Wall St.

She will be opening up a winter seasonal pop-up at Easton this November.
