Rep. Kelly: Bills to censor freedom of thought in Ohio schools are draconian, dangerous

Says HBs 322 and 327 have no place in General Assembly

COLUMBUS—Ranking Democrat Rep. Brigid Kelly (D-Cincinnati) issued a statement today after the House State and Local Government Committee heard additional testimony on two controversial GOP bills that would restrict Ohio schools from teaching about or advocating for what bill sponsors define as “divisive concepts.”

“Schools should be a place of opportunity; places where students can learn how to think critically, value each other’s experiences, and understand our past and present realities,” said Rep. Kelly. “These bills move Ohio in the wrong direction – backwards.”

House Bills (HB) 322 and 327 would limit the ability for teachers and school districts to have honest, age-appropriate discussions and learning opportunities about the past and present history of Ohio and the United States regarding topics like race and racism, gender and sexism, and other related topics that the bill sponsors define as “divisive.”

Following today’s hearings, HBs 322 and 327 await further consideration in the House State and Local Government Committee.
