The Ohio Organizing Collaborative (OOC) applauds Ohio Supreme Court decision striking down rigged legislative maps twice

COLUMBUS – The Ohio Supreme Court today rejected legislative maps that the Ohio Redistricting Commission had redrawn per the court’s order. The court found that this second set of maps violated the state constitution’s prohibitions against partisan gerrymandering and fell short of its proportionality standards. The order came after objections to the redrawn maps were filed on January 26 by petitioners in Ohio Organizing Collaborative v. Ohio Redistricting Commission, along with filings by petitioners in two other challenges to the General Assembly maps. The court ordered the commission to draw a third set of maps.

“Democracy wins again today. We are thrilled the Ohio Supreme Court has ruled in favor of the people by invalidating the new, rigged legislative maps that undermined the voices of marginalized people and communities of color in Ohio. It’s clear that the high court sides with the will of Ohio voters, who have demanded fair, constitutional, and representative maps for too long now. It’s time for the Ohio Redistricting Commission to do their jobs,” said Prentiss Haney, OOC’s Co-Executive Director. Haney is also an individual plaintiff in Ohio Organizing Collaborative v. Ohio Redistricting Commission.

Today’s court order can be found here. The earlier objections that the OOC filed regarding the latest legislative maps are also here, along with background on the case.
